Last of Us review (no spoilers)

Naughty Dog makes a mark on my gaming life that I can’t shake…

If you have not played this game, you must… but you are still safe to read cause there are no spoilers

The Last of Us does a terrific job of laying out the story for the gamer. You are Joel and you are helping Ellie to get across the country in a post apocalyptic world. On your way you run in to some problems, some people and some problematic people. These people are really what you would imagine would happen to men in this world. The story takes you through so many obstacles and so many turns. Naughty Dog throws so many punches at you and does not hold back. The game starts with a gut punch and ends with a kick in the face while you are crying on the ground and gasping for breath (figuratively speaking of course). And it does all this stuff really well.

Do you like third person action? Do you like leveling up weapons? Do you like creating weapons in mid-action scene? I you said yes to all these things then this is the game for you. One thing that this game does better than telling an amazing story is it’s gameplay. There are different types of enemies in this game and all pose a threat. In this world there is a fungus that has taken over many human brains and has infected them (essentially these are zombies but don’t tell anyone I told you that). Each enemy takes different strategy and each strategy takes a different weapon. Every time you run out of a certain weapon you have to replace it or you may end up needing it and getting killed.  The action in this game is nicely paced and it lets up rarely but at just the right times for you to enjoy the sights…

This game is beautiful… bottom line. There are moments in this game where I was in awe of the scenery. There is something beautiful about seeing the planet reclaim it’s land and taking over man made structures.  There is one scene in this game where I honestly teared up from the visuals. It’s in the latter 3rd of the game. I won’t ruin it for you. The facial animations are some of the best I have ever seen.

The score is beautiful. The voice acting is amazing. The enemies voices and sounds they make will creep you out like no other game. One of the best things about this game is the realistic thud you hear when you punch someone. The gun sounds and explosions are realistic sounding. This game’s action actually has a lot to do with sound. You “listen” for enemies as they do the same to you.

If you are like me and had not bought a PS3 for it’s whole console life cycle and have been juggling in your mind if you should but one, this game is worth finally pulling that trigger. Not only is this a great game for this console and not only is it a great game for this generation.. it is one of the greatest games ever made and I am fairly confident that we will be talking about it for years and years to come.

5 out of 5 stars
