The Matrix Trilogy (overview)

spoilers for the entire Matrix franchise

OVERVIEW

the-matrix

The Matrix Trilogy used to be my favorite film trilogy. It still is one of my favorites but it’s been replaced by The Dark Knight Trilogy (I will write about them someday soon, though). I just thought I would do an appreciation series of blogs for them since they hold such an amazing place in my heart. This is my overview and I will be breaking down each movie soon (or not soon) after.

The Matrix trilogy is about Neo. I won’t really insult your intelligence by telling you the entire story but you can go to this Wikipedia page to read more. I will give you this quote from one of the Wachowski siblings (the creators of the Matrix franchise):

What we were trying to achieve with the story overall was a shift, the same kind of shift that happens for Neo, that Neo goes from being in this sort of cocooned and programmed world, to having to participate in the construction of meaning to his life. And we were like, ‘Well, can the audience go through the three movies and experience something similar to what the main character experiences?’
So the first movie is sort of typical in its approach. The second movie is deconstructionist, and it assaults all of the things that you thought to be true in the first movie, and so people get very upset, and they’re like ‘Stop attacking me!’ in the same way that people get upset with deconstructionist philosophy. I mean, Derrida and Foucault, these people upset us. And then the third movie is the most ambiguous, because it asks you to actually participate in the construction of meaning.

I am sure we have all compared the story to some sort of religious story. Whereas a person becomes this sort of diety and has to protect the people form evil. In the end he must sacrifice himself in order to save/protect us all. My interpretation though is Neo is growing into blah blah ……….. just kidding. It is totally a religious type thing.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy this series of blogs and I hope you stay “plugged in” for the whole series -_-
